Land of shale

From June 29, 2007 to January 28, 2008

Presentation

At the departmental château de Châteaubriant, the General Council presents an exhibition that squeaks under your feet!

Tools and rocks are gathered up to recreate the atmosphere of a quarry, offering a fun way of discovering geology. The exhibition features epitaphs, sundials, sculptures, vineyard poles and many other even more surprising objects to illustrate everything that can be done with the blue stone so typical of the Châteaubriant region. “Land of shale” is also a chance to rediscover the monument through this fascinating material…

The exhibition takes the visitor on an emotional and humoristic journey with a visit to Dr Skize’s cabinet, a monomaniacal collector of shale…

Based on the existing inventory of the shale monuments of the region, the exhibition “Land of shale” encourages visitors to find more shale across the department by finding vineyard poles made of shale in a vineyard, oyster stands in the Bay of Bourgneuf, sundials in the Guerande peninsula, sculptures or crosses at street intersections, or monuments made of shale… Follow the shale all across the department!
